Shark Attacks in the Bahamas

Shark attacks are rare, but the Bahamas has had 34 unprovoked attacks since records began in 1580, according to the Florida Museum’s International Shark Attack File. The country ranks ninth in the world for reported shark attacks, with the United States, Australia, and South Africa leading the list.

In recent years, there have been other shark attacks involving American tourists in the Bahamas:

  • December 2023: A 44-year-old woman from Boston was killed by a shark while paddleboarding with a family member. Police said she suffered severe injuries to her right side and arm despite efforts to revive her.
  • January 2024: A 10-year-old boy from Maryland was bitten on his right leg while taking part in a shark tank experience at a resort. He was hospitalized for his injuries.
  • April 2024: Marlin Wakeman, a 24-year-old Florida native, was attacked by sharks at Flying Fish Marina on Long Island, Bahamas. He was working on a charter boat when he accidentally fell into the water, which he described as a “shark den.” Two sharks bit him, and he was rescued by the boat captain just in time.

Wakeman later recalled the terrifying moment, saying, “I was like, hey man, I don’t really want to die right now, this ain’t it.” One of the shark bites barely missed a major artery in his leg, which could have been fatal.
