Trump’s Energy Policies Could Ignite More Wildfires, Experts Warn

As California battles devastating wildfires, environmental science professors are raising alarms about the potential long-term impacts of President-elect Donald Trump’s energy policies. With promises to dismantle clean energy initiatives and expand fossil fuel production, Trump’s plans could lead to conditions that exacerbate wildfires, experts say.

Wildfires in Southern California have already claimed 16 lives and destroyed thousands of homes. While climate change isn’t the direct cause of wildfires, it fuels their frequency and intensity. Trump’s approach, which dismisses climate change as a “hoax” and prioritizes oil and gas production, could further destabilize ecosystems already vulnerable to fire outbreaks.

The Link Between Energy Policies and Wildfires
Professor Robert Wilson of Syracuse University emphasizes Trump’s lack of acknowledgment of climate change’s role in worsening wildfires. “His dismissive attitude indicates he’s unlikely to address the emerging threats of climate change seriously,” Wilson said.

Professor Jacob Bendix adds that increased fossil fuel use directly correlates with higher greenhouse gas emissions, leading to hotter and drier conditions—perfect fuel for wildfires. “There is pretty much a direct line from policies for fossil fuel use to increased wildfire,” he explained.

Uncertain Future for Climate Policies
James Clark, an environmental science professor at Duke University, says Trump’s actual energy policy remains speculative but notes that continued greenhouse gas emissions will intensify wildfire risks.

While Trump’s proposed leaders for key agencies, like the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy, suggest a focus on fossil fuels, broader energy strategies remain unclear.

Additional Challenges
Experts also highlight a lack of prescribed burns—controlled fires that reduce flammable materials—as a contributing factor to wildfire intensity. Addressing this issue, along with transitioning to cleaner energy sources, could mitigate future disasters.

What Lies Ahead
Fire crews are working to contain major fires like the Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst fires, but containment remains a challenge. As the West grapples with these blazes, experts urge policymakers to consider the long-term consequences of energy decisions on climate and disaster preparedness.

Trump’s energy policies, if implemented, could stoke conditions that make wildfires an even greater threat. Balancing energy needs with environmental responsibility is critical to reducing risks in the years to come.
