San Jose, Calif. – A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded on Valentine’s Day when 15-year-old David Gutierrez was brutally stabbed to death while on a date with his girlfriend. The shocking attack, carried out by a 13-year-old gang member, has left the community devastated and reignited concerns over juvenile justice reform.
Authorities say Gutierrez, who had no gang affiliations, was targeted in a random attack by five teenage suspects, all believed to be part of a gang. The group confronted him, allegedly seeking a confrontation, before attacking him. Gutierrez managed to escape, but the 13-year-old suspect chased him down and stabbed him multiple times, according to police. Despite efforts from his girlfriend, bystanders, and first responders, Gutierrez was pronounced dead at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
By February 21, all five suspects had been arrested, including the 13-year-old, three 16-year-olds, and 18-year-old Emanuel Sanchez-Damian. The youngest suspect was charged with murder and felony assault, while the others face felony assault charges.
During a press conference, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan called the incident deeply disturbing, stating, “No kid should go to the mall and be scared they won’t make it home. David deserved better.”
Police Chief Paul Joseph acknowledged flaws in the juvenile justice system, warning that lighter sentences for young offenders may be exploited by gangs. The 13-year-old suspect could spend less than eight months in a juvenile facility if convicted.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the senseless loss of a young life, demanding justice and reform to prevent future tragedies.
