Tragic Loss: Beloved Community Organizer Fatally Stabbed in Downtown LA

LOS ANGELES – A man has been charged with murder in the tragic stabbing death of Amanda Torres, a 28-year-old community organizer known for her dedication to helping others.

James Joshua Lopez, 24, is accused of fatally stabbing Torres after she intervened to protect her brother, who was allegedly being attacked by a group of men at a party. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced the charges on Wednesday, calling the crime a “horrific and senseless act of violence.”

The attack occurred near East 12th and Los Angeles Streets around 12:40 a.m. on January 26. Torres, a UCLA graduate, was well known for her compassionate heart and commitment to her community. She recently volunteered in fire relief efforts, further demonstrating her selfless nature.

“This devastating crime took the life of a young woman who dedicated herself to making her community better,” said District Attorney Nathan Hochman. “Amanda Torres was a bright, compassionate leader with limitless potential, and our hearts break for her family, friends, and everyone whose lives she touched.”
