Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating an incident in which approximately 30 Egyptian geese were fatally run over in Cooper City on Saturday night. The sheriff’s office reports that the geese were deliberately struck by an off-road vehicle occupied by four to five young adults. The attack occurred around 7:45 p.m. near the intersection of Southwest 49th Street and Southwest 120th Avenue, specifically in the lake easement between the Flamingo Gardens West subdivision and the Countryside Shops Plaza.
According to Gerdy St. Louis, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, the vehicle was last seen turning into the Flamingo Townhomes neighborhood. Detectives have reviewed video footage of the incident, which could aid in identifying the suspects. The authorities have not disclosed further details about the vehicle’s make or model at this stage.
Egyptian geese, native to Africa, have established populations in various regions, including the United States and Europe. In South Florida, the species has been increasingly spotted in local neighborhoods and parks. This tragic incident has raised concerns among residents and wildlife advocates, as such acts of cruelty toward animals are considered a serious offense.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office is seeking public assistance in identifying the individuals responsible for this inhumane act. Broward Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for any information that leads to the arrest of the perpetrators.
