The driver of a Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside Trump International Hotel Las Vegas on Wednesday has been identified by law enforcement through various pieces of evidence, including photos from charging stations, a passport, a driver’s license, and a distinctive tattoo found on his arm. Authorities have identified the individual as 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger, an active-duty U.S. Army special operations soldier from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
On Thursday, Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill provided an update on the investigation during a press conference, revealing that while there is substantial evidence suggesting that Livelsberger was in the truck at the time of the explosion, the body recovered from the vehicle is too badly burned to be identified conclusively. As a result, authorities have yet to confirm the identity through DNA testing or medical records.
The explosion, which occurred around 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday morning, resulted in the tragic death of Livelsberger and left seven others injured. While authorities have not made an official identification based on forensic methods, the investigation has uncovered significant evidence pointing to Livelsberger as the individual behind the wheel of the truck at the time of the incident.
Witnesses at the scene and nearby surveillance cameras have provided helpful information, and investigators are continuing to analyze all available evidence to piece together the circumstances surrounding the explosion. The truck had been parked outside the hotel prior to the blast, and law enforcement officials are considering various factors, including the possibility of a mechanical failure or other causes, though the exact reason for the explosion remains under investigation.
Sheriff McMahill emphasized that while the body has yet to be officially identified, all evidence gathered so far strongly suggests that Livelsberger was the driver of the Tesla Cybertruck at the time of the explosion. Authorities continue to conduct thorough investigations into the incident and have promised further updates as new information becomes available.
