Stay Prepared: Power Outages Likely This Weekend Due to Winter Storm

As winter storms approach the Heartland, residents are being urged to prepare for potential power outages and hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a First Alert Action Day from Sunday into Monday due to the threat of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. As the season’s first winter storm is expected to bring icy conditions, Butler County’s emergency management director, Robbie Myers, emphasized the importance of being prepared for any disruptions that could occur.

Myers reminded the community that winter storms are a common yearly challenge, urging residents to ensure that roads are cleared and that first responders are equipped to handle emergencies. “We deal with these situations every year, so we are ready,” Myers said, noting that the focus is on safety and preparedness.

One key recommendation from the emergency management office is to have an emergency kit on hand, including supplies for at least three to four days. These supplies should be tailored to each household’s needs, with an emphasis on avoiding panic buying and ensuring there are enough essentials for everyone.

Electric companies, including Ameren Illinois, are also taking steps to address potential power outages. The utility company is bracing for the possibility of downed power lines due to ice buildup, which can cause tree limbs to fall and disrupt power systems. Ameren’s Brian Bretsch noted that even a quarter-inch of ice on power lines could lead to significant issues.

In addition to preparing homes and equipment, Butler County officials are urging residents to check on their neighbors and loved ones, especially those who may require extra assistance, such as the elderly or those with pets. Myers encouraged the community to care for themselves first but also lend a helping hand to others who may be vulnerable during the severe cold.

With winter’s full arrival, the Heartland is preparing for the worst while hoping for the best, ensuring that both residents and first responders are equipped to handle whatever the storm brings.
