SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane man has been convicted of second-degree murder in the brutal 2023 stabbing death of another man in downtown Spokane, following a chilling attack caught on surveillance footage.
A jury found Steven P. White, 48, guilty of killing 44-year-old Shan A. Anderson after repeatedly stabbing him in the early morning hours of Aug. 27, 2023. However, after hours of deliberation, the jury could not reach a verdict on the first-degree murder charge, leading Superior Court Judge Rachelle Anderson to declare a mistrial on that count.
A Deadly Attack Caught on Camera
Authorities responded to a gruesome scene under the South Wall Street railroad viaduct, where a passerby discovered Anderson’s bloodied body in a parking lot.
Nearby security cameras captured disturbing footage of White lunging at Anderson in a stabbing motion approximately 13 times. Despite his injuries, Anderson was seen trying to walk away, limping and clutching his side, before collapsing. Audio surveillance recorded a male voice calling for help for several minutes.
According to the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office, Anderson suffered 14 stab wounds. Prosecutors revealed that White and Anderson knew each other, though the motive remains unclear.
Arrest and Trial
White was arrested a week after the murder near the Spokane Transit Authority Plaza. Detectives identified him based on his tattoos, facial features, and distinctive limp, which matched the suspect seen in surveillance footage.
White is set to be sentenced for second-degree murder on March 7. Meanwhile, a first-degree murder retrial is scheduled for March 31.
This shocking crime has left Spokane residents shaken, underscoring the persistent violence affecting the city’s streets.
