In a shocking development, political activist Gelareh Abbasi has been arrested once again by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and transferred to the infamous Evin Prison. The arrest took place on the morning of February 19 at her private residence in western Tehran.
According to HRANA News Agency, intelligence agents raided Abbasi’s home, seizing her electronic devices and mobile phone before taking her into custody. A source close to her family revealed that Abbasi, 48, suffers from a heart condition, raising serious concerns about her well-being in detention.
Abbasi had previously been sentenced to two years and six months in prison by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court under Judge Iman Afshari. She was convicted on charges of “assembly and collusion against national security.” After serving several months in Evin Prison, she was released in February 2023.
Now, just two years later, her re-arrest has reignited fears of political repression. Abbasi is not only a political prisoner but also a mother to a young daughter and the sole breadwinner of her family. Her detention has sparked outrage among human rights organizations, who warn of the dangers she faces behind bars.
