A woman postal worker was injured in an attempted robbery at a post office in East Harlem on Friday, the NYPD reported. The incident happened at the Hellgate Station post office, located at 153 E. 110th Street, just after 6:15 p.m.
According to the police, a man entered the post office with a gun and tried to rob the federal building. He attacked a 51-year-old female worker, striking her in the head with the gun and demanding money. Despite his violent actions, the robber did not manage to steal anything. Instead, he fled the scene on a bicycle, leaving the area empty-handed.
The postal worker was treated for her injuries at the scene and did not need further medical care. Thankfully, she was not seriously hurt. Police are still investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made so far.
This robbery attempt occurred just a week after a tragic incident in Harlem, where another postal worker, Ray Hodges, was fatally stabbed at a local deli. Ray was a USPS letter carrier who was attacked when he stepped in front of Jaia Cruz, a man who was waiting in line. Cruz was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the killing.
The attempted robbery at the Hellgate Station post office and the recent murder of Ray Hodges have raised concerns about the safety of postal workers in the area. The NYPD continues to search for the suspect responsible for the attempted robbery, and the investigation is ongoing.
