Orlando, Fla. – Get ready for some rain and cold weather! A weather system moving through the South is expected to bring heavy rain to Central Florida, with the possibility of ice and snow in parts of North Florida.
The rain will start light, but will become heavier overnight. While Orlando will mostly see cold rain, there’s a chance for some flurries late in the morning.
Ice forecast: Where could the worst ice conditions hit in Florida?
In Northern Florida, especially near the I-10 corridor and the Florida-Georgia state line, a mix of rain, sleet, and freezing rain is expected. As temperatures stay colder in this region, there’s also a chance for snow showers in North Central Florida. Snow could accumulate up to one to two inches, possibly reaching as far south as Alachua County.
In addition, ice could build up to about two-tenths of an inch in Flagler, Lake, Marion, and Volusia counties. This ice on roads, especially on bridges and overpasses, will create hazardous driving conditions. There’s also a risk of tree branches and power lines being damaged by the ice, which could lead to power outages.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for parts of the Florida Panhandle, Big Bend, and northern Florida, according to the National Weather Service. This could cause power outages, tree damage, and travel disruptions. If you’re in these areas, it’s best to avoid traveling, especially in the morning.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for parts of northern and northeast Florida for Wednesday morning. Light mixed precipitation could cause some ice accumulation, making roads slippery during the morning commute.
A Freeze Warning will be in effect from 12 a.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. for northern and northeast Florida, with freezing temperatures expected.
Forecast Timeline:
The freezing weather will spread into North Central Florida after midnight. The cold zone will affect areas from Ocala to Palm Coast and northward. In Orlando, there might be a few snow flurries by Wednesday morning as the rain clears up.
Road conditions will be dangerous in much of North Florida and the Panhandle overnight and into Wednesday, so it’s best to avoid driving or drive with extreme caution.
Wednesday’s temperatures will be in the mid to upper 40s and might not go above 50 in Orlando. Rain chances will decrease through the afternoon, and skies will clear up for the rest of the week. Temperatures will stay lower than usual, but will warm up to the 70s by the weekend.
