After a week-long closure due to severe wildfires and resulting power outages, most LAUSD campuses will reopen their doors on Monday, January 13, 2025. The district-wide shutdown last week left thousands of students without in-person classes as firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the raging blazes that have swept through Los Angeles.
While many schools in heavily impacted areas were forced to stay closed, the district has now deemed it safe for the majority of students and staff to return. LAUSD officials stated that conditions have improved across the region, allowing for a cautious but necessary reopening. Schools like Roscomare Road Elementary and Community Magnet Charter are being closely monitored, but eight schools in particularly affected zones, including Canyon Charter Elementary and Paul Revere Middle School, will remain shut until further notice.
Beverly Hills Unified School District has also confirmed that all campuses will reopen on Monday, with regular classes and extracurricular activities resuming. Pasadena Unified School District, however, has extended its closure until January 17 due to ongoing concerns.
To ensure the safety of students and staff, outdoor activities will be limited, and masks will be provided to combat poor air quality caused by the lingering smoke. LAUSD will continue to monitor conditions overnight and provide updates to families and school employees accordingly.
The fires, which have burned through nearly 40,000 acres, have already claimed at least 16 lives, displaced over 100,000 residents, and left 87,000 others on standby. As firefighters make progress in controlling the blazes, the focus shifts to rebuilding communities and restoring normalcy in affected areas.
The reopening of schools brings a sense of relief to many families who have been struggling to balance safety concerns with the need for a return to routine education.
