Traffic Stop in Orangeburg County Leads to Arrest and Narcotics Seizure
Orangeburg County deputies arrested a Santee man on Sunday following a routine traffic stop that led to the discovery of multiple narcotics, Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced.
Deris Shaw, 33, was charged with trafficking crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, trafficking ecstasy, and a traffic violation, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.
“This case highlights how a seemingly routine traffic stop can escalate into a more serious situation,” Sheriff Ravenell said. “It serves as a reminder of the challenges and dangers our deputies face daily.”
The arrest occurred after deputies conducted a traffic stop and discovered that Shaw was driving under suspension. During the encounter, deputies searched the vehicle and located a bookbag containing:
- 440 grams of marijuana
- 19.1 grams of crack cocaine
- 111 pills identified as ecstasy
Additionally, deputies recovered a rifle from the vehicle.
Shaw was taken into custody without incident, and the confiscated narcotics and firearm were secured as evidence. The charges against him include trafficking, which carries significant penalties under South Carolina law, and possession with intent to distribute.
The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office commended the deputies for their vigilance during the stop, emphasizing the importance of routine traffic enforcement in uncovering criminal activity. “Each traffic stop is an opportunity to protect our community by identifying and addressing illegal activities,” Sheriff Ravenell added.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing, with authorities working to determine if Shaw has connections to broader drug distribution networks. The Sheriff’s Office encouraged community members to report suspicious activity to assist in curbing illegal drug trafficking in the region.
This arrest underscores the crucial role of proactive law enforcement in safeguarding public safety and addressing the drug trade, which has far-reaching impacts on local communities. Shaw is expected to face legal proceedings as the charges against him are processed.
