Rise of Criminal Gangs Fuels Urgent Debate on Sanctuary Policies

The United States is facing a growing threat from illegal alien criminal gangs, which undermine the safety and security of communities. Transnational organizations like the Tren de Aragua, originally from Venezuela, have become particularly alarming. These gangs are linked to a surge in crimes, including human trafficking, drug smuggling, and violent acts such as shootings and robberies. In Colorado, the Tren de Aragua gang has been involved in crimes ranging from jewelry store heists to violent assaults. Between 2023 and the summer of 2024, over 60 gang members were identified by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, although many more may have evaded detection due to the Biden administration’s ineffective border policies.

In response, a task force in Aurora, Colorado, was created to investigate the gang’s potential involvement in taking over apartment complexes. Criminal alien gangs often exploit migrant communities, contributing to an increase in crime. Sanctuary policies that protect criminal aliens make it harder for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to collaborate with local law enforcement and apprehend these dangerous individuals. Some sanctuary cities go as far as shielding foreign-born criminals from ICE, allowing them to remain in the U.S. and continue committing crimes.

The Tren de Aragua gang has been linked to a series of violent incidents in Colorado, including a jewelry store robbery and a shooting in Denver. In December 2024, 19 suspected members of the gang were arrested for extortion, kidnapping, and violent assault. This pattern of violence is spreading beyond major cities and into smaller towns, as seen in Broomfield, Colorado, where an illegal alien previously deported for multiple DUIs was released by local authorities and later caused the deaths of a mother and son.

The Biden administration’s open-border policies have led to the release of individuals with inadequate vetting, further endangering public safety. It is crucial to secure the border, enforce immigration laws, and eliminate sanctuary policies that protect criminal aliens, ensuring that American communities are safe. The time for decisive action is now.
