Protecting National Security: Lawmakers Introduce “Federal Secrets” Task Force

New Congressional Task Force to Focus on Declassification of Federal Secrets

On Tuesday, a new congressional initiative aimed at increasing government transparency was announced on Capitol Hill. The “Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets” has been established under the leadership of House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY). The primary mission of this task force is to examine the declassification of government materials deemed to be in the public interest.

Rep. Comer stated that the initiative builds upon former President Donald Trump’s executive order, issued last month, which initiated the declassification of records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He emphasized that this effort is intended to continue pushing for public access to historically significant classified information.

The bipartisan task force will be led by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), who underscored the importance of government transparency. She asserted that for too long, secrecy within the federal government has limited public access to crucial historical records. Rep. Luna described the task force as a step toward greater accountability, ensuring that Americans receive long-awaited answers about significant events.

Beyond the high-profile assassination records, the task force’s scope will extend to several other classified matters. These include records related to Jeffrey Epstein’s client list, the origins of COVID-19, classified files pertaining to the 9/11 attacks, and documentation on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) and unidentified submerged objects (USOs).

The task force has been authorized to operate for six months. A press release indicated that the full list of participating lawmakers will be disclosed at a later date. As part of its initial efforts, the task force sent 11 formal requests to various government agencies on Tuesday morning, seeking access to relevant classified documents.

Rep. Luna emphasized that this initiative will not be symbolic or limited to issuing statements. Instead, she assured that the task force will relentlessly pursue the release of critical information until the American public receives the transparency they have long demanded.
