Newsom Recall Likely to Begin This Week, Karen Bass to Lead Next

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass are facing heavy criticism for their handling of the wildfires that have devastated parts of Los Angeles. Over the weekend, firefighters made progress in containing the fires, but dangerous weather conditions are expected to continue, putting neighborhoods at risk. The wildfires have caused at least 24 deaths and destroyed thousands of homes. This disaster has turned into not only a tragedy for residents but also a political crisis for both leaders.

Critics argue that both Newsom and Bass were unprepared for the fires, with dry hydrants and empty reservoirs making firefighting efforts more difficult. Additionally, California’s water and forest management have been points of contention, especially among Republicans. Some members of their own party, as well as local voters, have expressed dissatisfaction, fueling discussions about possible recall efforts.

Recall campaigns have already begun. A formal recall petition has been launched against Newsom, while more than 100,000 people have signed a petition calling for Bass’ resignation. Randy Economy, who is leading the recall against Newsom, has criticized the governor’s comments about rebuilding areas like Pacific Palisades, saying it’s not his place to make such decisions. Economy’s group, Saving California, had already planned a recall before the fires, but the recent devastation has accelerated their efforts.

In California, recall efforts are possible if enough signatures are collected. For Newsom, this would require around 1.3 million signatures, and for Bass, an estimated 99,000 signatures would be needed. Once signatures are verified, a recall election would take place to decide whether to remove the officials from office.

Newsom has faced recall challenges before. In 2021, voters overwhelmingly rejected a recall effort. Despite this, Economy believes Newsom’s leadership during the fires is a critical issue and may still be a focus of discontent, especially as the fires continue. On the other hand, Bass’ absence from Los Angeles during the initial stages of the fires has drawn criticism. She was in Ghana attending a presidential inauguration when the fires broke out, and some have questioned her commitment to the city.

Though some residents, like Dave Wasson, who lost his home to the fires, believe it’s hard to blame Newsom or Bass for the scale of the disaster, many feel that leadership should have been more prepared. Despite the criticism, the focus for now remains on recovery and rebuilding.
