Former UConn Basketball Player Eric Cobb Arrested in Mother’s Murder Case
Eric Cobb, a 28-year-old former college basketball player, was arrested in Florida on Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of his mother, Erika Winford, 51, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).
Authorities reported that Winford’s body was discovered in the backyard of a residence near Durkeeville, covered with a blanket and towels. Witnesses informed investigators that they heard a woman screaming, “He’s going to kill me!” on Sunday night, followed by gunfire. Despite these alarming sounds, no witnesses contacted 911.
A friend of Winford visited the home on Monday and noticed a significant amount of blood, prompting them to call the police. When officers arrived at the scene, Cobb attempted to leave the home but was immediately detained. Following an interview with detectives, he was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Cobb is currently being held at the Duval County Jail.
Cobb, a 6-foot-9-inch athlete, previously played college basketball at both the University of South Carolina and the University of Connecticut. His collegiate career spanned from 2015 to 2019, making him a recognized name in NCAA basketball.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has stated its commitment to pursuing justice for Winford’s family. In an official statement, the department confirmed it would collaborate closely with the State Attorney’s Office to ensure accountability for the crime.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to establish a comprehensive timeline and motive behind the tragic incident.
