Mobile Breaks 130-Year Snow Record: Historic Winter Storm Shatters Alabama’s All-Time High

Mobile, Alabama, witnessed a rare and historic weather event on Tuesday as heavy snowfall shattered records dating back over 130 years. By 6:10 p.m., the National Weather Service in Mobile reported an astonishing 7.5 inches of snow—surpassing the previous all-time record of 6 inches set in 1895.

This wasn’t the only record to fall. The city also broke its one-day snowfall record of 5 inches, which had stood since January 24, 1881. Tuesday’s storm blanketed the region with snow, creating difficult to impossible travel conditions across south Alabama.

Under a winter storm warning until Wednesday morning, the area experienced several inches of snow accumulation. The storm’s back edge was gradually moving through the Mobile metro area by evening, bringing an end to the snowfall west of Interstate 65 and north of Interstate 10. However, heavy snow persisted for areas south of I-10 and into the Florida Panhandle.

As skies clear tonight, the region faces another challenge: bitterly cold temperatures. Forecasts predict lows between 10 and 15 degrees, with wind chills plunging to as low as 0 degrees. These conditions are life-threatening for those outdoors, including animals, and travel remains highly discouraged due to impassable roads.

For Mobile and surrounding areas, this record-breaking event will be remembered as a historic day, highlighting the vulnerability of southern regions to extreme weather. Residents are urged to stay safe, avoid travel, and prepare for the dangerous cold ahead.
