Military Whistle or Crime? Soldier Charged with Trump, Harris Data Theft

A U.S. Army soldier stationed in Texas has been indicted on charges of selling confidential phone records, including data purportedly linked to President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

John Wagenius, a 20-year-old soldier based at Fort Cavazos, Texas, faces accusations from a Seattle grand jury of accessing and selling sensitive telecommunications data through online platforms. Authorities allege Wagenius operated under the alias “Kiberphant0m” and hacked into multiple telecommunications companies to obtain the call records.

In November, the online persona allegedly posted AT&T call logs purportedly linked to Trump and Harris, offering the data for sale. While federal authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of the stolen information, the indictment highlights concerns over cybersecurity and the exploitation of high-profile individuals’ data.

The charges do not detail Wagenius’s specific rank or responsibilities at Fort Cavazos, formerly known as Fort Hood. It remains unclear whether his military position provided him access or resources that facilitated the alleged crimes.

A spokesperson for Fort Cavazos stated, “We are aware of the arrest of a Fort Cavazos soldier. III Armored Corps will continue to cooperate with all law enforcement agencies as appropriate.”

Wagenius is reportedly linked to other cybercrimes through his online alias, though these allegations are not part of the current indictment. His case is expected to be prosecuted in Seattle, where the investigation originated.

The indictment has raised significant concerns about cybersecurity vulnerabilities and the potential misuse of military personnel for illegal activities. Federal prosecutors are expected to focus on determining the scope of Wagenius’s alleged activities, the extent of the data breach, and whether any national security implications exist.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies have not disclosed whether additional charges may follow or if other individuals are involved. Wagenius is expected to be extradited to Seattle, where the legal proceedings will take place. Further details will likely emerge as the case progresses.
