Man Killed in Near East Side Police Shooting in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – A man was fatally shot by police early Tuesday morning on the near east side of Indianapolis. No officers were injured during the incident, which began shortly after 2:15 a.m.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers responded to reports of a woman injured in the 1600 block of E. Washington Street. Dispatchers informed officers that the woman had been assaulted by multiple individuals.

The injured woman entered a local business to seek help, and officers provided assistance upon arrival. She was later transported to a hospital for further treatment.

While on the scene, IMPD Chief Chris Bailey stated that one of the officers recognized a man who appeared to have an active arrest warrant.

“The officer attempted to speak to that suspect. The suspect said, ‘I don’t have to talk to you,’ and walked away from the officers with his hands in his pockets,” Bailey said.

The situation escalated, leading to a confrontation and an officer-involved shooting. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing, and IMPD officials are reviewing body camera footage and witness statements.
