Las Vegas Sheriff Pledges Transparency After Police Shooting of 911 Caller Brandon Durham

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Sheriff Kevin McMahill addressed the public after the controversial shooting of Brandon Durham, 43, who was killed on November 12, 2024, by Officer Alexander Bookman. Durham had called 911 to report a home invasion while sheltering with his 15-year-old daughter.

Sheriff McMahill, speaking about the tragedy, emphasized the importance of transparency and the need for a thorough investigation. “I’m not going to hide because the video doesn’t look good,” McMahill stated, referencing LVMPD’s policy of releasing use-of-force incident details and video within 72 hours.

The Incident

According to reports, Durham called 911 during a home invasion involving 31-year-old Alejandra Boudreaux, with whom he reportedly had a brief dating history. Boudreaux had been removed from Durham’s property the night before after police intervention but returned the next day, allegedly breaking in and triggering the tragic encounter.

Fourteen seconds after officers broke down Durham’s front door, Officer Bookman fired seven shots, killing Durham. Bodycam footage shows Durham and Boudreaux struggling over a knife, though the exact details remain unclear. Sheriff McMahill admitted, “I still can’t tell who was actually holding that knife when the officer confronted the two individuals.”

Family Demands Justice

Durham’s family has called for Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson to charge Officer Bookman, who has been placed on paid administrative leave. Durham sustained seven gunshot wounds, including one to the head, with a toxicology report indicating methamphetamine in his system.

Broader Implications

This shooting has reignited debates about police protocols, especially in high-pressure situations involving civilians in distress. Sheriff McMahill reiterated his commitment to improving procedures, acknowledging the public’s concerns and ensuring accountability.

Legal Proceedings

Boudreaux faces multiple charges, including home invasion with a deadly weapon, domestic violence assault, and child abuse. Her criminal case is currently on hold as she undergoes a competency evaluation.
