Honeymoon Tragedy: Tennessee Man Sentenced to Life for Wife’s Murder on Dream Fiji Honeymoon

A honeymoon should be a time of celebration, love, and new beginnings. But for one couple, their dream getaway to Fiji turned into a nightmare that shook two families and made headlines around the world.

In 2022, Bradley Robert Dawson, a 40-year-old man from Memphis, Tennessee, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, Christe Chen. This shocking crime occurred just two days after the couple arrived at the luxurious Turtle Island resort, a breathtaking paradise nestled in Fiji’s Yasawa archipelago.

A Romantic Escape Turns Dark

Christe Chen, 36, and Bradley Dawson seemed like any other happy newlyweds when they checked into the exclusive resort, which hosts only 14 couples at a time. But paradise turned to tragedy when Christe’s lifeless body was found in their room by resort staff. She had suffered multiple blunt force injuries to her head.

Resort workers had noticed something amiss when the couple didn’t show up for breakfast or lunch following an argument the previous night. Meanwhile, Dawson had fled the scene—escaping by kayak to a nearby island.

A Courtroom Drama Unfolds

Dawson pleaded not guilty and faced an eight-day trial. His lawyer, Anil Prasad, argued that prosecutors hadn’t provided enough evidence to convict him, claiming that Dawson had no injuries suggesting a physical altercation and that many of the couple’s belongings were left behind, disputing claims that he planned to flee.

But Justice Riyaz Hamza saw things differently. In his sentencing, he emphasized Dawson’s disregard for Christe’s right to life and his appalling actions after the incident. “You fled the scene of the crime, leaving the deceased alone and helpless,” the judge stated.

Justice Served

Dawson was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of 18 years before he can seek parole. The court was convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that Dawson was solely responsible for the crime.

Behind the Headlines

Before this tragic event, Dawson worked in the IT department at a Memphis nonprofit called Youth Villages, which supports child welfare. Online records showed no prior criminal history for him.

The location of the crime, Turtle Island, is a remote and exclusive paradise. Surrounded by Fiji’s volcanic Yasawa Islands, it’s the kind of place people dream of visiting—a place of beauty now marked by heartbreak.

This heartbreaking story serves as a reminder that tragedy can strike even in the most idyllic settings. For Christe Chen, her honeymoon ended in a devastating loss of life, while Bradley Dawson’s actions have forever changed his own.
