HEAVY SHOWERS AND STRONG WINDS: Hawaii Braces for Midweek Weather Whiplash

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Hawaiian Islands are gearing up for significant weather changes as a shallow cold front from the northwest combines with a weak trough over Maui County, bringing widespread showers, strong winds, and thunderstorms. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a forecast warning of rapid shifts in conditions, particularly for Kauai and Niihau, starting today.

Early showers will impact the Garden Isle, with breezy, cool northerly winds trailing the front as it advances down the island chain. By Tuesday, the system is expected to stall near the Big Island, setting the stage for a dramatic shift midweek. From Wednesday night through Friday morning, Hawaii will experience heavy rainfall, strong gusty winds, and potential thunderstorms.

Meteorologists warn residents across all islands to remain vigilant, as these severe conditions could evolve quickly. The threat window for heavy weather could last 12 to 24 hours for each affected area, increasing the potential for localized flooding and other hazards.

Early satellite imagery reveals thunderstorm activity west of the Big Island, expected to dissipate by mid-morning. For now, light to moderate trade winds will prevail, with showers concentrated in windward and mountain areas. However, the tranquil conditions are temporary.

Mariners are advised to prepare for rough seas and strong northerly winds, with a Small Craft Advisory anticipated later today for Oahu and Kauai waters. Swells along north-facing shores are expected to rise to advisory levels by midweek due to a strengthening low-pressure system to the north.

While fire weather concerns are minimal, the NWS predicts a sharp increase in moisture from Thursday onward, ensuring widespread soaking across the islands. Aviation conditions will largely remain under visual flight rules, though some restrictions may apply during showers.
