A family in Dallas, Texas, is grieving after Anthony Egeonu, a father of three and CVS security guard, was shot and killed during a robbery attempt. The tragic incident happened late Friday night at a CVS store on Main Street near North Akard Street in downtown Dallas, according to NBC affiliate KXAS-TV.
Police responded to the shooting around 11 p.m. and found Egeonu at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically did not survive. Authorities later arrested two juveniles connected to the shooting. Their identities and charges have not been disclosed due to their age.
Egeonu, a husband and father of three children aged 16, 8, and 4, was working for a third-party security company at the CVS store. According to his family, the incident occurred when he confronted two individuals who were shoplifting. After he approached them, they turned and shot him.
Egeonu’s wife, Octavia, shared that her husband had been working toward a promotion that would have moved him into a supervisory role and away from the store floor. Despite knowing the risks of his job, Egeonu was dedicated to his work and passionate about law enforcement. The couple had been married for eight years.
Egeonu’s mother, Gwendolyn Pipkins, expressed her heartbreak, saying, “To go to work, do what you’re supposed to do, and then have your life taken by someone who doesn’t value it … it’s unimaginable.” His daughters, Amira and Jayda, also shared their pain, saying they will forever miss their father.
CVS issued a statement expressing their condolences and confirmed their cooperation with the Dallas Police investigation. “The store and pharmacy remain open as we work with authorities to understand what happened,” the company stated.
Octavia Egeonu said that faith has been a source of strength for the family during this difficult time. “He stayed at the job because he was close to a promotion that would have taken him out of harm’s way,” she added.
The family is left devastated, mourning a loving father, husband, and dedicated worker who was simply doing his job when his life was tragically cut short.
