An off-duty Chicago police detective was found dead in his Mount Greenwood home on Friday afternoon, according to authorities.
The 59-year-old detective was discovered unresponsive around noon inside a home located in the 3900 block of West 104th Street. Chicago police confirmed that he had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
At this time, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released the detective’s name, and the cause of death is still under investigation as the autopsy has not yet been completed.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling shared a message expressing condolences to the detective’s family, friends, and colleagues. “Please keep his loved ones and everyone who worked with him in your thoughts as they navigate this unimaginable loss,” Snelling said.
The detective was assigned to the Area 2 Division, which covers much of Chicago’s South Side. Superintendent Snelling also acknowledged the emotional toll such incidents can have on members of the police department.
“Grief can be incredibly heavy as we try to make sense of losing a fellow member of the Chicago Police Department,” he wrote, encouraging officers to seek support from the department’s Employee Assistance Program and the Chaplains Ministry if needed.
The tragic news has deeply impacted the Chicago Police Department and the community. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further details will be shared as they become available.
