A tragic incident in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, has left an 8-year-old boy dead and his stepfather facing serious charges.
Michael Meagher, a bright and funny boy from Brookfield, was fatally shot early Monday morning in his stepfather’s home on Lincoln Avenue. Police say Michael’s stepfather, 52-year-old Steven Merkel, was showing him his guns when one accidentally went off, striking Michael. Officers arrived at the scene around 2:25 a.m. and found Michael with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly did not survive.
Merkel has been charged with felony reckless homicide and unlawful use of a dangerous weapon. He is currently being held in jail on a $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
Michael was described as a kind and energetic boy who loved playing with his friends and spending time with his two older sisters. A fundraiser started by a family friend to cover funeral expenses and other costs has nearly reached its $22,000 goal. The fundraiser states, “Michael’s family, friends, and school are all deeply mourning his loss, and we appreciate the support during this difficult time.”
Michael was a student at Brook Park Elementary School in La Grange. In a statement, the Brookfield-La Grange School District 95 said, “Michael brought incredible energy and kindness to Brook Park Elementary. He was loved by everyone and will be greatly missed.”
