Florida’s Final Democratic Governor Honored as a ‘True Statesman’

Buddy MacKay, who served as Florida’s 42nd Governor for just 23 days after the sudden death of Governor Lawton Chiles, passed away on New Year’s Eve at the age of 91. His family confirmed his death to The Associated Press on Thursday, saying that MacKay, a lifelong public servant, passed away peacefully in his Florida home after taking a nap on Tuesday.

MacKay’s political career spanned many years, including roles as a state legislator, congressman, and diplomat. Despite his brief time as governor, he made a lasting impact on Florida’s politics. He remains the last Democratic governor of the state, having lost the 1998 gubernatorial race to Jeb Bush by nearly 10 percentage points.
