EXCLUSIVE: Woman Accused of Drugging and Defrauding Elderly Men in Tragic Romance Scam

The FBI has launched an urgent appeal for potential victims of Aurora Phelps, a 43-year-old woman accused of orchestrating a chilling romance scam that resulted in multiple deaths. Phelps, who also goes by the names Aurora Flores, Aurora Velasco, and Aurora Alvarez, allegedly used dating apps to lure older men, drug them, and exploit their financial resources.

According to federal prosecutors, Phelps is linked to at least two deaths and one disappearance. Authorities claim she manipulated her victims, gained access to their banking and retirement accounts, and, in some cases, even took control of their Social Security benefits. The indictment, originally filed in October 2023 and unsealed this month, details an elaborate scheme spanning multiple years.

One victim, whom she met in July 2021, fell unconscious for several days after Phelps allegedly drugged him. During that time, she stole his personal belongings, accessed his financial accounts, and attempted to liquidate $3.3 million in Apple stock. Fortunately, she failed to withdraw the funds.

Another case in 2022 details how Phelps allegedly drugged a man at a Las Vegas restaurant, convinced him to travel to Mexico City, and used his credit cards for extravagant purchases. Days later, he was found dead in a hotel room while Phelps returned to the U.S.

A third victim vanished after meeting her at a hotel in Guadalajara, Mexico. Prosecutors claim Phelps systematically drained his bank account, collected his Social Security payments, and even attempted to claim his retirement benefits.

Her final known victim was found dead in his bathroom in May 2022, just one day after going on a date with Phelps. Authorities say she once again accessed his accounts, even purchasing a gold coin using his money.

Phelps, who was arrested in Mexico last September, faces multiple charges, including wire fraud, identity theft, and kidnapping. If convicted, she could face life in prison. The FBI urges anyone who may have fallen victim to her scheme to come forward.
