EXCLUSIVE: Native American Activist Leonard Peltier Released After Nearly 50 Years—A Controversial Homecoming

In a shocking turn of events, Leonard Peltier, the Native American activist convicted in 1975 for the killings of two FBI agents, has been released from federal prison and returned to the Turtle Mountains. His release, granted through clemency by former President Joe Biden, has sparked both celebration and outrage.

Peltier, now 80, had been imprisoned for nearly five decades for the fatal shooting of FBI agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Though convicted, he has always maintained his innocence. His case has long been a subject of debate, with supporters arguing that he was unfairly prosecuted and opponents insisting that justice was served.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters at the Sky Dancer Casino in Belcourt, North Dakota, Peltier expressed deep gratitude and disbelief at the overwhelming welcome. “I was totally shocked by the support. I never thought I’d make it out alive,” he said, recalling his years of activism and dedication to Native American rights.

Turtle Mountain Tribal Chairman Jamie Azure also voiced his astonishment at the long-awaited clemency. “I heard previous presidents had come close to granting his release, but it never happened. My heart went out to Leonard and his family every time he was denied,” Azure said.

However, Peltier’s release remains controversial. Former FBI Director Christopher Wray strongly opposed his clemency, calling him a “remorseless killer” and stating that his release undermines the rule of law. Wray emphasized that multiple judges and parole boards upheld Peltier’s conviction over the years, reinforcing the belief that justice had been served.

Under the terms of his commutation, Peltier will spend the remainder of his sentence in home confinement due to his declining health. While supporters see his release as long-overdue justice, critics argue that it is a tragedy for law enforcement and the families of the slain agents.

As Peltier settles into his new reality, the debate surrounding his case continues, leaving the nation divided over whether his release is an act of long-overdue justice or a heartbreaking mistake.
