EXCLUSIVE: Colorado Men Arrested for Using Cannon to Smuggle Meth, Tobacco into Federal Prison

In a shocking and almost unbelievable turn of events, two Colorado men were arrested in Louisiana after allegedly attempting to smuggle methamphetamine and tobacco into a federal prison using a cannon.

The bizarre incident unfolded in Grant Parish, Louisiana, home to the U.S. Penitentiary Pollock, a high-security facility located about 120 miles north of Lafayette. According to the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office, 18-year-old Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz and 19-year-old Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, both from Greeley, Colorado, planned to launch the contraband over the prison’s security fence using a high-powered air cannon.

Authorities say the suspects were attempting to smuggle in a staggering $112,000 worth of tobacco and $89,500 worth of methamphetamine. The cannon, which operates using compressed air, reportedly has an impressive range of over 350 feet—more than enough to clear the prison’s perimeter.

Law enforcement quickly intervened, arresting both men before they could carry out their high-risk plan. They now face serious charges, including attempting to introduce contraband into a penal institution and attempting to distribute methamphetamine.

Adding to the legal troubles, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on Herrera Munoz, as he is reportedly in the country illegally.

The daring yet reckless attempt has left authorities stunned, serving as a stark reminder of the extreme—and often desperate—measures taken to smuggle illicit items into correctional facilities.
