Ex-Centennial Gymnastics Coach Faces Minimum 11-Year Prison Term for Child Sex Assault

A former Centennial gymnastics coach is facing a minimum of 11 years behind bars after being convicted of child sexual assault. The sentencing, handed down on Monday, was announced by the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office.

Who is Erik Ray Oldham?

Erik Ray Oldham, 39, once owned and coached at A+ Athletics, a gymnastic training center. But in August 2021, his time there came to an end when troubling allegations surfaced. Later that year, an individual stepped forward, accusing Oldham of misconduct involving a young athlete. By May 2022, Oldham was arrested, and after a jury trial in April, he was found guilty of child sexual assault, enticement, and coercion.

What Does His Sentence Include?

Oldham’s punishment includes an indeterminate sentence, meaning his release depends on several factors. The state’s Sex Offender Management Board will assess his behavior in prison, participation in treatment, and the likelihood of reoffending. If he fails to cooperate with treatment or is deemed a high risk, Oldham could remain in prison for life.

Additionally, Oldham was sentenced to 20 years to life on parole, further ensuring he remains under strict supervision if ever released.

Proclaiming Innocence

Through his attorney, David R. Jones, Oldham has maintained his innocence, declaring plans to appeal the conviction.

A Message from the District Attorney’s Office

Assistant District Attorney Ryan Brackley expressed satisfaction with the sentence, emphasizing the importance of justice for the victims and their families.
“The court recognized the profound breach of trust Mr. Oldham committed and imposed separate, consecutive sentences to account for the harm he inflicted on each victim,” Brackley stated.
