On Sunday, Demi Moore won the award for Best Female Actor in a Film – Musical or Comedy for her role in The Substance. She was clearly shocked when she received the award. “I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m just in shock right now,” Moore said as she took the stage. “I’ve been doing this for over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor. I’m just so humbled and grateful.”
Moore, 62, shared a personal memory from about 30 years ago when a movie producer once referred to her as a “popcorn actress.” At that time, she took those words to heart, believing that she didn’t deserve success in the industry. This belief affected her over the years, and at one point, she even thought that perhaps her career was over, and she had done everything she was meant to do.
However, everything changed when she received the script for The Substance, a film that came into her life during a difficult time. “I was in a low point in my life,” Moore explained. “Then I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box script called The Substance come across my desk, and the universe told me that I’m not done.” This project reignited her passion for acting and reminded her that she still had more to give.
Moore’s family and friends were overjoyed by her win and celebrated her achievement on social media, sharing a video of their enthusiastic reactions with the caption, “She did it!”
The Substance is a feminist fable that warns about the dangers of obsessively chasing youth. It was written and directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat.
At the award ceremony, Moore left the audience with a powerful message inspired by her film. She shared, “In those moments when we feel like we’re not smart enough, pretty enough, thin enough, or successful enough, I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know, you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.'” Moore’s heartfelt speech reminded everyone to appreciate their worth, no matter what others or society may say.
