Cruelty Uncovered: Screven County Senior Charged with Aggravated Animal Abuse

Screven County Man Arrested for Animal Cruelty and Neglect

A 73-year-old man from Screven County, Georgia, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses related to animal cruelty and neglect. Jonathan Clarence Roberts faces two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, 11 counts of animal neglect, and one count of abandoning a dead animal.

The investigation began following complaints received by the Screven County Sheriff’s Office regarding livestock at a property on the 2400 block of Jenk Hill Road. Concerned citizens reported that the animals were not being properly cared for. Authorities later discovered dead animals visible from a public roadway, prompting a deeper investigation.

Upon obtaining a search warrant, law enforcement conducted a search of the property, which uncovered two deceased cows, 11 additional cows in various states of neglect, and two malnourished goats. Local animal control officers, a veterinarian, and an inspector from the Department of Agriculture were called to assist with the case.

Following a thorough investigation, authorities determined that Roberts failed to provide the animals with basic necessities, including adequate food and water. The lack of care and resources reportedly led to the deaths of at least two cows.

The Sheriff’s Office stated that the remaining livestock were immediately seized and relocated to a facility where they could receive proper care and treatment.

Roberts’ actions have drawn attention to the importance of responsible livestock management and the legal obligations of animal owners. In Georgia, the law mandates that all animals, including livestock, be provided with appropriate food, water, and shelter to ensure their welfare. Neglecting these responsibilities can result in criminal charges, as seen in this case.

The Screven County Sheriff’s Office emphasized their commitment to investigating and prosecuting cases of animal cruelty. They urged the public to report any suspected instances of neglect or abuse to local authorities to protect vulnerable animals.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical role communities play in safeguarding animal welfare by reporting concerns and working collaboratively with law enforcement.
