Clock Ticking: Johnson’s Struggle to Fix Issues with Pritzker & Council

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is facing challenges as his approval ratings drop, and the midterm elections approach. However, there is still time for him to improve his position by focusing on better communication with key political allies and stakeholders.

One of his primary struggles is his tense relationship with Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. Recently, their disagreement over stalled hemp regulations worsened their already strained ties. Experts believe this relationship can be mended if both leaders start working together privately and constructively, rather than criticizing each other publicly. Both leaders need to collaborate to solve pressing budget issues facing the city and state.

Mayor Johnson also faces issues with the City Council, as shown during a difficult budget negotiation. To rebuild trust, Johnson must communicate earlier and more meaningfully with council members, especially as the 2027 elections approach. He could learn from former Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who focused on forming strong relationships with alderpersons before asking for their support on challenging matters.

Alderman Walter Burnett (27th Ward) believes that while building these relationships takes time, it’s achievable. Burnett mentioned examples from former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s tenure when political rivals eventually became allies. Johnson’s recent budget negotiations taught him about council members’ priorities, and he now needs to use this insight to build stronger alliances.

To assist, Johnson has appointed Alderman Jason Ervin (28th Ward) as the new Council floor leader. Ervin’s role will involve bridging the gap between the mayor’s office and council members. While some criticize Johnson’s leadership style and decision-making, Ervin aims to foster cooperation and advance community projects.

However, Johnson’s critics, such as Alderman Marty Quinn (13th Ward), believe his administration is inexperienced and too liberal, making it hard to gain council or public support.

The mayor’s relationship with Governor Pritzker is also a significant hurdle. Recent events, like Johnson’s opposition to hemp product restrictions, have caused tension. Pritzker has voiced frustration over the lack of communication, noting that his team rarely hears from the mayor’s office.

Both leaders face large budget deficits and need to work together for the good of the city and state. Alderman Burnett emphasized the importance of collaboration, urging both leaders to set aside personal differences and prioritize the needs of their constituents.
