BREAKING: Woman Accused of Looting Fire-Ravaged Home While Wearing ‘Palisades Strong’ Shirt

In a shocking case of crime amid tragedy, a California woman has been arrested for allegedly looting a home destroyed by the devastating Palisades Fire—all while wearing a t-shirt that read “Palisades Strong.”

Authorities identified the suspect as Karen Matsey, who was caught stealing antiques from a home in the Pacific Palisades area, which was left in ruins after the wildfire. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Southern Division, officers responded to a looting report on February 21, but Matsey had already fled the scene before they arrived. However, thanks to a witness description of her vehicle, police tracked her down and arrested her at her residence, where they discovered several stolen antiques.

A Community in Crisis, Looters Take Advantage

The Palisades Fire, which erupted on January 7, has been nothing short of tragic, destroying more than 10,000 structures and forcing the evacuation of around 40,000 people. With residents already facing unimaginable loss, criminals have been taking advantage of the disaster zone. Since the fire began, police have made dozens of arrests for looting and related crimes.

“In the Palisades area and the fires we’ve experienced in Los Angeles, isn’t it bad enough that we have thousands of people displaced, only to then be victimized by looters?” said Assistant LAPD Chief Blake Chow.

Authorities are working to prevent further crimes while residents attempt to rebuild their lives. Matsey is now facing grand theft charges as police continue their crackdown on looting in wildfire zones.

This heartbreaking situation serves as a grim reminder that, even in the face of tragedy, some will exploit the vulnerable for personal gain.
