Two men from Havana, Illinois, have been arrested in connection with a nationwide ATM burglary ring that has been targeting drive-up ATMs across multiple states.
Authorities took 20-year-old Marol Rodriguez and 26-year-old Leandro Villegas into custody on Saturday in Abingdon after linking them to a recent ATM heist. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the case on February 20 after a drive-up ATM in Abingdon was burglarized, resulting in a significant amount of stolen cash.
Surveillance footage played a crucial role in the arrests, helping detectives connect the duo to numerous similar burglaries in Illinois and across the U.S. Investigators tracked their vehicle, leading to their capture.
Rodriguez and Villegas now face serious charges, including burglary, theft, and damage to property.
The investigation is ongoing, with multiple law enforcement agencies involved, including the FBI’s Peoria office, sheriff’s offices from Fulton, Mason, Woodford, and LaSalle counties, and the Havana Police Department.
Authorities have not ruled out further arrests as they continue to uncover the extent of this multi-state operation.
