The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida) is calling for federal hate crime charges after a shocking shooting incident in Miami Beach. Authorities say Mordechai Brafman, 27, opened fire 17 times at a vehicle after allegedly believing the occupants were “Palestinians.”
According to police, Brafman made a U-turn, stopped in front of the victims’ vehicle, and began shooting unprovoked, striking both victims. One was hit in the shoulder, while the other suffered a graze wound on the arm. While in custody, Brafman allegedly stated, “I saw two Palestinians and shot and killed both.”
CAIR-Florida is urging both state and federal authorities to pursue hate crime charges, emphasizing that the attack’s anti-Palestinian motive should be a determining factor.
“We urge state and federal law enforcement authorities to bring hate crime charges in this case based on the alleged perpetrator’s statements to police that reportedly indicate an anti-Palestinian motive,” said Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, CAIR-Florida Communications Director.
This attack comes amid a sharp rise in anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian hate crimes. CAIR reports that from January to June 2024, there were 4,951 bias-related complaints nationwide—a 69% increase from the same period in 2023. Last year’s civil rights report recorded 8,061 complaints, the highest in CAIR’s 30-year history.
CAIR-Florida remains committed to protecting civil rights, promoting justice, and empowering American Muslims. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected.
