Breaking: 15-Year-Old Arrested on Gun Charges After Traffic Stop in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. – A routine traffic stop in Carbondale on Saturday night took a shocking turn when police discovered a stolen firearm and over 40 grams of cannabis inside a vehicle, leading to the arrest of a 15-year-old male on multiple gun-related charges.

According to the Carbondale Police Department, officers pulled over a vehicle near S. Wall Street and E. Campus Drive around 9 p.m. on February 22 for unspecified traffic violations. Upon further investigation, authorities uncovered a stolen firearm with its identification marks defaced, along with a significant quantity of cannabis.

Among the vehicle’s occupants was a 15-year-old male from Murphysboro, who was immediately taken into custody. He now faces serious charges, including:

  • Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon
  • Unlawful possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a stolen firearm
  • Defacing identification marks of a firearm

The juvenile was transported to a detention facility, where he remains pending a court appearance.

Additionally, 23-year-old Dijon A. Wyatt, also from Murphysboro, was arrested for possession of cannabis. He was later released and is awaiting his court hearing.

The other passengers in the vehicle were not charged and were allowed to leave the scene.
