Fire crews responded to the fire at approximately 7:40 p.m. at a two-story residential building on Young Street, near Punahou Street. As the blaze escalated, a Mayday call was issued around 8 p.m. after two firefighters went missing during the operation.

One firefighter managed to escape just before a partial roof collapse occurred in the back corners of the building. However, at around 8:30 p.m., firefighters successfully extricated the second firefighter, identified as Jeffrey Fiala. Despite efforts to revive him, Fiala was pronounced dead at the scene.

Honolulu Fire Chief Sheldon “Kalani” Hao confirmed Fiala’s death. He was a relatively new member of the department, having served for a year and a half. “It’s a very difficult time for us, and we just ask for your prayers and support,” Chief Hao stated.

Alongside Fiala, five other firefighters were hospitalized, as well as one civilian. As of Tuesday, the hospitalized firefighters were still receiving care.

Witnesses to the fire described the rapid spread of the flames, with one resident attributing the blaze to a neighbor who had been cooking. The fire quickly engulfed the building, leading to a chaotic scene as smoke billowed and flames erupted from the roof.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed his sorrow, calling the loss of a firefighter in the line of duty a “somber moment.” Governor Josh Green also extended condolences, emphasizing the sacrifice made by those who serve.

The fire department’s investigation is ongoing, and emergency crews temporarily closed part of Young Street to battle the fire. Meanwhile, the American Red Cross provided support to displaced residents, and a shelter was opened at McCully District Park Gym for affected families.
