Tallahassee is beginning to recover from the snow and ice that blanketed the city earlier this week. Warmer temperatures and sunny skies are helping to melt the remaining frozen precipitation, which should mostly disappear by the end of today or Friday.
On Tuesday night and Wednesday, about 2 inches of sleet and snow fell across the city, covering main roads and neighborhoods. While major roads have started clearing, icy patches from overnight refreezing caused closures on highways like Interstate 10 (I-10) and several other streets. First responders have been working to redirect traffic and ensure safety.
The Tallahassee International Airport reopened Thursday, resuming flights in the afternoon. According to Christian Oliver, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, daytime temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 30s and low 40s today, helping to melt the remaining ice. By the weekend, highs will reach the upper 50s, though overnight temperatures will stay in the 20s. Some shaded streets and areas, such as sidewalks, driveways, and the city’s famous canopy roads, may take longer to clear completely.
The Florida Department of Transportation closed a large portion of I-10 from the Alabama border to Gadsden County due to dangerous driving conditions. Portions of State Road 20 and other roads were also closed. As of Thursday morning, around 200 miles of I-10 remained closed, but officials expect improvement as temperatures rise.
Local authorities are urging residents to drive cautiously, especially on shaded and less-traveled roads. Below is a list of closed roads in Leon County as of Thursday afternoon:
