Biden’s Ukraine Obsession: Former Russian President Responds

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has criticized U.S. President Joe Biden for his focus on Ukraine, claiming that it hurt U.S. politics and made relations with Russia worse. Medvedev, who is now Russia’s Security Council deputy chairman, shared his views on Telegram, saying that Biden’s policies regarding Ukraine created long-lasting problems for the U.S.-Russia relationship. He believes that the situation may take decades to fix, and it’s unclear whether things can ever return to normal.

Medvedev argued that Biden’s actions, especially his policies toward Ukraine, have left behind a “crisis legacy.” According to him, these policies will continue to cause problems for future leaders. He also criticized Biden’s “confused state of mind” and said that his administration knowingly left a troubling legacy for others to deal with.

Medvedev also suggested that Biden’s interest in Ukraine began when he served as vice president under President Barack Obama. However, Medvedev claimed that it became an obsession when Biden became president. He remembered meeting with Biden when the U.S. leader was not yet showing signs of dementia but noticed his strong focus on Ukraine. Medvedev believed that Biden’s interest was based on Obama’s instructions, but over time, it turned into something more intense and problematic.

Medvedev blamed Biden’s lack of understanding about Ukraine’s history and identity for many of the political mistakes related to the conflict. He argued that Biden’s actions led to an ongoing war between Russia and the West, which brought the world close to a nuclear conflict. Medvedev warned that while the war might benefit the U.S. economically, the political and safety risks of a potential deadly conflict are far more serious.

Additionally, Medvedev connected Biden’s focus on Ukraine to the Democratic Party’s loss in the 2024 presidential elections. He claimed that Biden lost control of the situation, leading to a major defeat for his party.

The comments came amid continued tensions related to the conflict in Ukraine, which began to escalate in February 2022. Russia has repeatedly accused the West, especially NATO, of provoking the war by expanding its influence and providing military support to Ukraine. Since the conflict began, the U.S. has sent around $100 billion in financial and military assistance to Ukraine.
