Man Arrested in Connection to New Year’s Eve Fatal Shooting in Louisville
Louisville, Ky. – A man was arrested on Thursday by the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred on December 31 in the Algonquin neighborhood.
According to LMPD spokesperson John Bradley, officers responded to reports of a shooting around 4:15 a.m. in the 1600 block of South 13th Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man who had been shot. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The victim was identified as Quante Burris. During the investigation, authorities learned that Burris had been involved in an argument with his girlfriend before the shooting. According to police documents, the girlfriend contacted several individuals to assist in getting Burris to leave the area.
One of those individuals, Robert Handley, arrived at the scene with others and confronted Burris. The confrontation escalated into a physical altercation, during which Burris was shot.
A witness provided police with a mirandized and recorded statement identifying Handley as the shooter. Based on this testimony and other investigative findings, LMPD’s Homicide Unit, Criminal Interdiction Division, and SWAT team worked together to locate and apprehend Handley.
On Thursday, Handley was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was also charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, reflecting his prior criminal record.
The case remains under investigation as detectives work to gather additional evidence and determine the involvement of any other individuals.
This tragic incident marks a violent end to 2023 in the Algonquin neighborhood and underscores the devastating consequences of escalating disputes. The LMPD encourages anyone with further information about the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
