A 20-year-old man in Alabama has been indicted for the murder of his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, who was found strangled to death near her home in Loganville, Georgia, last summer.
Jesus Monroy was taken into custody on Thursday and is now facing multiple serious charges, including murder, feticide, aggravated assault, child molestation, and statutory rape. Authorities say that Mia Campos, who was nearly full-term in her pregnancy, was killed in July 2024, just weeks before she was due to give birth.
Monroy was initially arrested shortly after Mia’s death but was only charged with giving false information to police. As investigators gathered more evidence, they charged him with Mia’s murder. He was released in August 2024 after posting 10% of his $56,000 bond, but now, with a grand jury indictment, he’s back in custody.
The heartbreaking case began on the night of July 14, when Mia left her home with an unknown person. When she didn’t return, her family used a location-tracking app to find her phone. Their worst fears were realized when they discovered her body in a wooded area near their home in the early hours of July 15.
“I found my daughter laid face down,” Mia’s father, Edward Campos, told the media. “It was hard. I knew something was wrong—her lips, her bleeding nose. They murdered my baby.”
At first, police weren’t sure how Mia had died. Investigators, crime scene specialists, and the medical examiner’s office all worked to piece together what had happened. After an autopsy on July 16, the cause of death was confirmed as “asphyxia due to neck compression.” The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Monroy, who was identified as Mia’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her unborn child, was brought in for questioning early on. Police said he gave false statements to investigators, but they have also hinted that he may not be the only suspect in the case.
Mia’s family has been devastated by the loss, mourning both her and the grandchild they never got to meet. Her mother started a GoFundMe to raise money for the funeral, writing, “Mia, my daughter, the girl of my eyes, my baby, has passed away with her son in her belly. I ask God to watch over her and her baby. Now she and my grandson are in heaven with God.”
For Mia’s father, there is only one focus now—justice. “Justice is coming soon,” he said, confident that the truth will come to light.
Monroy is currently being held at the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond as he awaits trial.
