In response to freezing temperatures sweeping across Alabama, the city of Montgomery has opened a warming shelter to help residents stay safe during the cold. Starting Monday at noon, the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl will be available 24/7 through Thursday, Jan. 23, offering a place to seek refuge from the frigid weather. The city is urging anyone in need of warmth to take advantage of this vital resource, as temperatures are expected to drop below 40 degrees, with lows dipping into the 20s. Additionally, Montgomery may see 1 to 3 inches of snow on Tuesday, adding to the urgency of finding shelter.
“This vital resource is open to anyone seeking warmth and safety as temperatures drop,” stated a release from the city. Community partners, nonprofits, and volunteers have made this shelter possible, and their dedication highlights the spirit of compassion in Montgomery.
Along with keeping warm, residents are being advised to exercise caution while driving, as icy conditions and snow could create hazardous travel situations. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is urging drivers to prepare for potentially dangerous conditions.
“We recognize that winter weather can pose unique challenges for our Alabama communities, particularly in those areas where snow and ice are rare,” said ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. “Reducing unnecessary travel during dangerous conditions is crucial to preventing accidents and ensuring first responders can perform their duties efficiently.”
During Alabama’s last major weather event, ALEA troopers responded to 80 traffic crashes involving weather-related factors, highlighting the risks on icy roads. ALEA is prepared to assist with all available troopers, including those assigned to marine patrols, but strongly encourages drivers to avoid traveling in dangerous conditions.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecasted significant impacts in central and southern parts of the state, prompting ALEA to offer the following driving tips to minimize risks during the winter storm:
- Slow down and increase following distance.
- Use snow tires or chains if necessary.
- Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, water, and non-perishable food.
- Stay informed of weather updates and road conditions.
With temperatures expected to drop sharply and snow falling, residents are urged to stay safe, seek shelter if needed, and avoid unnecessary travel during this winter weather event.
