Sources Reveal Senate Panel’s Secret Probe into Pete Hegseth’s Background

Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, is facing increased scrutiny following reports of alleged sexual assault and financial misconduct. The Senate Armed Services Committee, led by both Republican Sen. Roger Wicker and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed, has requested additional information regarding these accusations, which include a 2017 sexual assault allegation and claims of financial mismanagement at a veterans organization Hegseth once led.

The sexual assault allegation, first reported in November, stems from a 2017 incident where a woman accused Hegseth of assault at a California hotel after a party. While Hegseth denied the accusation, stating that the encounter was mutual, the Monterey Police Department did not file charges. He later paid the woman in a settlement, though his attorney clarified that Hegseth did not admit wrongdoing.

The Senate committee has sought further documentation from the Monterey County District Attorney’s office beyond the public police report. The DA’s office, however, informed the committee that no additional evidence exists, except for a memo declining prosecution.

In addition to the sexual assault claim, Hegseth’s tenure as CEO of Concerned Veterans for America has also come under scrutiny. A New Yorker report outlined allegations of financial mismanagement and sexist behavior. The committee has requested documents related to Hegseth’s time at the organization, including financial records and any complaints of misconduct.

Despite the allegations, Trump has expressed continued support for Hegseth, praising his qualifications and calling him a “winner.” Hegseth’s attorney, Timothy Parlatore, has emphasized his client’s innocence and cooperation with the Senate’s requests.

As Hegseth’s confirmation hearing approaches on January 14, 2025, the Senate Armed Services Committee continues to review the allegations, with a particular focus on ensuring a thorough vetting process. Hegseth has been submitted for a full FBI background check, following calls from Wicker for a traditional screening.
