Authorities in northwest Indiana have charged a 70-year-old woman with the murder of her estranged husband after he was found dead in his home earlier this week.
Stephanie Nagel, a resident of Rensselaer, was arrested on Friday in connection with the shooting death of Phil Nagel, 71. According to the Rensselaer Police Department, officers responded to a home on the 700 block of West Milroy Avenue on Monday after a concerned neighbor discovered Phil Nagel’s body. Friends had grown worried when he failed to show up for scheduled events.
An autopsy later confirmed that Phil Nagel had died from a gunshot wound. Investigators gathered evidence from the scene and nearby areas, which led them to focus on Stephanie Nagel as a suspect. Authorities obtained a search warrant for her residence, where they reportedly uncovered additional evidence linking her to the crime.
During an interview with police, Stephanie Nagel allegedly provided inconsistent statements before ceasing cooperation altogether, officials said. She was subsequently taken into custody and booked at the Jasper County Jail.
The investigation remains active, and police are urging anyone with relevant information to contact the Rensselaer Police Department at 219-866-7602.
