Washington, D.C. – A man from Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for a deadly shooting inside an apartment in Southeast D.C.
The tragic incident happened at 2312 Green Street, S.E., where 32-year-old Koran Brown shot and killed Cynthia Barringer. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin, Jr. and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
Brown had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed back in November 2024 in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
According to investigators, the situation turned violent on the day of the crime. Around 3:45 p.m., Brown and Barringer got into an argument inside her apartment. During the heated exchange, Brown pulled out a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol and shot Barringer in the head. After firing the fatal shot, he set fire to the bedroom where the shooting took place and quickly left the building.
Surveillance cameras captured Brown leaving the scene and then arriving at a family member’s home shortly afterward. At that location, he got rid of his bloody t-shirt and the murder weapon. Police later searched the home and found both the gun and the shirt. DNA testing confirmed that the evidence was linked to both Brown and Barringer, making it clear that he was responsible for the crime.
Authorities credited the Metropolitan Police Department for their investigative work in solving the case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office also acknowledged the contributions of Lead Paralegal Specialist Meridith McGarrity and Victim/Witness Advocate Latrice Washington Williams. Prosecutors Steven Rickard, Dana Joseph, and Andrea Antonelli were recognized for handling the case and ensuring that justice was served.
