Chicagoans should prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures starting Saturday night, with bitterly cold weather expected to last until Wednesday.
Even though Friday feels warmer than usual, the National Weather Service predicts temperatures will fall into the single digits Saturday night. By Sunday night, wind chills could make it feel as cold as minus 14 degrees.
According to meteorologist Gino Izzi, Chicago hasn’t seen subzero temperatures in over a year. But that will change Sunday night, with temperatures expected to dip between zero and 5 degrees below zero.
Monday and Tuesday will also be extremely cold, with overnight temperatures again hovering around zero to 5 below. Wind chills during this period could feel like 10 to 20 degrees below zero, making it especially harsh.
The cold snap is expected to ease up on Wednesday, with daytime temperatures rising to around 20 degrees, Izzi added.
To help residents stay warm, the Garfield Community Service Center will be open:
- Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Sunday and Monday: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Stay safe and dress warmly if you need to go outside during this cold stretch!
