Two men involved in a violent crime spree across Columbus, Ohio, culminating in a shootout on an interstate highway, have been sentenced to significant prison terms. Faisal Darod, 25, of Columbus, was sentenced to 25 years, while Aden Abdullahi Jama, 21, of Reynoldsburg, received a 13-year sentence.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio described the series of crimes as traumatizing to the victims, including armed robberies at multiple locations such as a GameStop in Hilliard, an Auto Gallery in Minerva Park, and a Fifth Third Bank in Upper Arlington. Darod, armed with a Glock handgun with an extended magazine, was accompanied by Jama and another suspect during the robberies.
The crime spree intensified in July 2023, leading to a high-speed chase on Interstate 70 after officers tried to stop the stolen Porsche Cayenne linked to the suspects. The chase, involving speeds over 125 mph during rush hour, ended when the vehicle was damaged. During the pursuit, Darod and Jama fled on foot, while a third suspect ambushed police officers, opening fire and wounding one officer.
The responding officer suffered life-threatening injuries, and the third suspect, identified as Abdisamad Ismail, was fatally shot after being struck at least 30 times. The violence and criminal actions have led to serious consequences, with Darod and Jama now facing significant time in federal prison. Prosecutors emphasized that these crimes, driven by greed, have had lasting impacts on the community and law enforcement, highlighting the dangers of gun violence.
