Grand Jury Rules Against Charges in Controversial South Brunswick Officer-Involved Death

A state grand jury has decided not to pursue charges against law enforcement officers involved in the fatal shooting of Shamar Leggette, which occurred in South Brunswick, New Jersey, on January 24, 2024. Leggette, a Brooklyn resident, was killed in a gunfight with members of the U.S. Marshals Service at a motel on Route 1 in the Monmouth Junction area of the township.

The incident unfolded as Leggette, who had been wanted for a series of felony investigations, was confronted by law enforcement officers after being on the run for over a year and a half. The U.S. Marshals, in coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), had been actively tracking Leggette, who had evaded capture during this period.
